Microstructure / Metallography

Microscopic examination of polished and etched metal sections to characterize grain structure.

What It Measures

Metallographic examination involves mounting, grinding, polishing, and chemically etching a small sample, then examining it under an optical or electron microscope at 50–1000× magnification. It reveals grain size, phase distribution, precipitate morphology, and defects like micro-cracks, porosity, or unwanted phases. This is the most detailed structural examination available.

Why It Matters

Microstructure determines mechanical properties. Two plates of the same alloy with different heat treatments will have different grain structures — and different strengths, fatigue lives, and corrosion behaviors. Metallography is the definitive way to verify that the material was processed correctly and that its internal structure matches the specification.

Standard Followed

ASTM E3 / E407

Equipment Used

Metallographic mounting press, grinding and polishing system, optical microscope with image capture, and appropriate etchants for the alloy system.

When You Need It

  • Heat treatment verification beyond hardness
  • Failure analysis and root cause investigations
  • Qualification of new alloys or suppliers
  • Aerospace material certification (per AMS specifications)
