Positive Material Identification (PMI)
Non-destructive field verification of alloy composition using handheld XRF.
What It Measures
PMI uses X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to identify the elemental composition of a metal sample without cutting or destroying it. The handheld analyzer fires X-rays at the surface and reads the fluorescence spectrum. It provides a rapid alloy-grade match within 10–30 seconds, confirming whether the material is what the label says it is.
Why It Matters
PMI is the fastest way to catch a material mix-up on the shop floor. Unlike full chemical analysis, it requires no sample preparation and no lab visit. When you need to verify 50 plates in a warehouse or confirm that the right bar stock reached your CNC cell, PMI gives you a definitive answer on the spot.
